Founded in 2024, our nonprofit organization was created to empower underserved communities in New York, with a special focus on men returning home from incarceration, individuals experiencing homelessness, and at-risk youth. We recognize the systemic gaps that limit access to transitional housing, job readiness support, and educational opportunities—particularly for Black and Brown men in areas like Long Island and Queens. In New York State alone, more than 30,000 individuals are released from prison annually, with many returning to communities that lack the infrastructure to support successful reintegration. Nearly 50% of formerly incarcerated individuals are unemployed one year after release—a figure that disproportionately affects men of color. Compounding this, homelessness among single men continues to rise, with men representing over 70% of the adult homeless shelter population in NYC. The lack of reentry housing, access to GED programs, and pathways into stable employment all contribute to cycles of poverty, recidivism, and systemic marginalization. At the same time, youth in underserved neighborhoods face deep educational disparities: New York City's dropout rate among Black and Latino males remains over 20%, and many afterschool programs have been defunded or shuttered post-pandemic. We believe that reentry should mean reinvention, not restriction. Our work is grounded in dignity, community, and collaboration. Through transitional housing, workforce training, GED and college access, community events, and strong partnerships, we build bridges to sustainable independence. Our model centers on wraparound services, healing-centered engagement, and real-life impact. We are committed to doing more than just "what everyone else is doing"—we're here to fill the overlooked gaps, try what others won’t, and make empowerment a lifestyle, not a one-time event.

Founder & President, Empower Pathways Initiative Inc.
Mark Askew is the Founder and President of Empower Pathways Initiative Inc., a New York-based nonprofit committed to reentry support, transitional housing, workforce training, and youth empowerment. His leadership is rooted in lived experience, personal transformation, and a deep passion for helping others rebuild with dignity.
Seven years ago, Mark was working as a recording engineer at Sony when a devastating car accident changed the course of his life. Unable to work for months, he lost his job, and his home was on the verge of foreclosure. In desperation, he made a life-altering decision that led to his involvement in a federal drug conspiracy case. He served four years in prison and came home to find everything gone—his house, his car, his clothes, and every personal belonging stolen or given away.
But what couldn’t be taken from him was his will to rise.
Mark’s reentry journey was filled with hardship, but also clarity. He knew too many others faced the same impossible odds—returning home to nothing, yet still expected to rebuild everything. Out of this truth, Empower Pathways was born.
Today, Mark leads with empathy, vision, and urgency. He brings people together, fights for equity, and works daily to ensure that no one else has to go through reentry alone. His story is one of loss—but more importantly, of purpose, reinvention, and impact.
